Tsambika
On Rhodes many men and women are called Tsambikas or Tsambika. The reason for this is probably a mir
Rhodes is the largest island of the Dodocanese. This archipelago includes about 200 islands. Some islands are very small, 27 islands of the group are permanently inhabited. Rhodes has an area of 1398 square kilometers. This makes it the fifth largest island in Greece. The landscape of Rhodes is hilly.
The highest peak in the Attaviros Mountains reaches over 1200 meters. Rhodes has a length of 80 km and a maximum width of 35 km. The coast mostly consists of sand and pebble beaches.
Carnival in Greece
Greek Carnival officially begins on Saturday evening, ten weeks before Greek Orthodox Easter, with the last day, Ash Monday, being the most important day.
On Thursday it is Tsikno pempti or Barbeque Thursday (or Smokey Thursday). People are getting ready for an extensive BBQ with family or friends - at home or in tavernas. or people leave the city, into nature to set up the bbq there. It is then ten days before the start of the fasting period.
Three days after that is Tyrofagos Sunday; it is the day when people only eat dairy products. It is also the last day of pre-Lent.
The day after Tyrofagos is Ash Monday. It's the first day of Lent.
Greek Easter
Once every four years, the Greek Orthodox Easter coincides with our Easter. . This year, in 2016, however, Greek Easter falls on May 1! That is a month later than in the Netherlands, where Easter is celebrated on March 27. And that is actually great because in May it is already wonderful summer weather on Rhodes! A day at the beach or a lovely walk and also experiencing the special customs and religious ceremonies associated with the Greek Easter. . .. you couldn't wish for a better combination! This way you have the chance to get a taste of the real Greek life. Just as many people in the Netherlands see Christmas as one of the most important holidays, Easter is the most important religious holiday in the Greek Orthodox faith. The whole week leading up to the Greek Easter is called the 'Good Week' or the 'Big Week' and is all about the resurrection. There is a church service almost every evening during that week. The women are engaged in the preparations for Easter, which means that they clean the house (and often also whitewash the outside). They decorate the streets and bake the Easter bread and Easter cakes and of course the Easter eggs are painted (red) on the Thursday before Passes.
In the ancient city, the main attractions are: the theater, the stadium (200 meters long and 35 meters wide) and the remains of the Temple of Apollo.
The main attractions in the knight city from the Middle Ages are the Grand Master's Palace, Archaeological museum, the city walls and the Mandraki harbor (The colossus would have stood at the entrance of this).
Oudgriekse replica's
Busts, vases, oil lamps and even entire statues from classical antiquity are for sale in Rhodes Town near the museum, of course as replicas. Icons are also offered. Replicas of classic jewelry can be found at the jewelers.
Sponges
The sponge island of Kálymnos, which also belongs to the Dodecanese, supplies Rhodes with yellow and brown natural sponges. During the season, the divers sometimes also enter the Mandráki harbor to sell the fruits of their dangerous work directly.
Walking
Those with good mobility can see Rhodes Town from a side that even the native population often does not know and discover a few gems of streets.
You can take a piece of Rhodes home with you in the form of fragrant thyme, sheep's cheese, ouzo and colorful ceramics. Beware, your stay in Rhodes can get expensive! The range of shops, jewelers and craft shops easily equals that of a large city. Rhodes Town and Lindos in particular offer, in addition to the usual range, a wide range of luxury items such as fur coats and valuable jewellery. As a souvenir you can choose from an abundance of small, useful and above all useless objects.
Ceramics
Rhodos' specialty is colorfully painted plates that can serve as wall decoration. In classical antiquity, the dishes, jars, vases and cups from Rhodes were known throughout the Mediterranean. This tradition has been preserved to some extent: the potters of Rhodes enjoy a good reputation throughout Greece, but the hand or foot-operated potter's wheel has been replaced by an electric potter's wheel. Nevertheless, it is worth visiting a pottery and seeing the different stages of the ceramics production process.
Greek culture and Greek food have a lot in common.
Not only was one of the world's first cookbook authors a Greek, the subject of "food" also appears regularly in Greek mythology forward.
In the story about Tantalos, for example, who was king of Lydia. He was a son of supreme god Zeus himself and friends with many important gods. Every day he was allowed to eat at Zeus' table. An honor that a mortal man almost never happened. It made Tantalos haughty and that was bad for him. He invited the gods to his table, where, unknown to them, he set before them his son Pelops, who had been slain for the occasion. He wanted to prove that the gods were not as omniscient as they pretended to be. But that was disappointing: all the gods immediately noticed what was happening, except Demeter, who was so preoccupied with worry that she didn't realize what she was eating. Mythological gods never just got angry, they were always angry. That was now happening in full force. Tantalo's son was put back together in no time thanks to their special powers.
The west coast of Rhodes is greener, quieter and less popular than the east coast of the island. There will also be some wind at times. The beaches are narrower and more often pebbly rather than sandy. The residents on the east coast also criticize the west coast because they find their beaches much better. It's a matter of taste. The beaches may be a bit narrower, but they are elongated.
Most tourist resorts are located on the stretch between Rhodes town and Paradisi airport, the northernmost part of the west side of the island. After that, the touristic buildings almost stop and you get to see more farms and grape fields.
There are the remains of the ancient city of Ialyssos and Mount Felerimos with its photogenic mix of Byzantine and Johannite churches nestled among the pine trees.
Behind the airport is the road to the Petoulades valley where you can see millions of butterflies (actually they are moths) (late June - early September). The next destination worth mentioning is Kamiros. This is the second abandoned ancient city on the west coast and also one of the island's most popular excursion destinations. After Kamiros the road becomes even quieter. In the port of Kamiros Skala there are daily connections with the island of Chalki, located near Rhodes. Monolithos is the main village in the southern part of the west coast. The beach is not really much, but on the hill is a castle of the Johannites, which is perhaps the most impressive castle on the island. It was built in the 15th century. From the hill there is a beautiful view of the island of Halki. South of Monolithos, the island is hardly inhabited.
Between Rhodes Town and the small seaside resort of Charáki, the east coast of the island is dotted with bays, each more beautiful and picturesque than the next. There are no places of interest in Faliraki. However, its proximity to Rhodes Town makes it an acceptable holiday destination for all-inclusive travelers. The individual traveler is better off staying in the places Charáki or Stegná. The beaches here are extremely varied and reach
from the pebble beach between rocks in Anthony Quinn Bay to the kilometre-long, wide sandy beach with dune-like upturned sand hills at Tsambika Beach. It is therefore no wonder that the tiny fishing village of Fakáki has now become the main holiday destination on the island. But the village is clearly divided in two. The real seaside resort is the entertainment and nightlife center of the island with numerous discotheques and music clubs, amusement parks and snack bars.
Young English people in particular feel good here. In the north, most of the island's large hotels are located along a long sandy beach.
The road from the beautiful seaside resort of Kolymbia to the interior runs through the forest, along the river Loutani to Archipoli, a picturesque farming village. The route is perfect for a walk or a bike ride. Just before the village, in a pine forest, is the Agios Nektarios Monastery where you can take a rest and quench your thirst with the cool spring water. Nice trips from Kolymbia include: Rhodes Town, Lindos, Butterfly Valley, Kamiros and Kalithea.
